Identifying
Local opportunities
1. “Home Depot just recalled 210,000 of these
hurricane helpers for possible shock hazard” (https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=pubname%3AMIHB%21Miami%2BHerald%252C%2BThe%2B%2528FL%2529/year%3A2018%212018/mody%3A0912%21September%2B12&f=advanced&action=browse&format=text&docref=news/16E64565D4872468)
Summary: Over 210,000 RIDGID NXT wet/dry vacuums are being recalled for
electrical issues that can potentially shock users, and I don’t mean figuratively.
Problem: The problem is with the ON/OFF switch that can easily be detached,
exposing wiring and potentially shocking individuals working in wet environment.
This is an engineering issue, not an assembly one, with proper engineering a
switch that embeds into the unit with a tight seal is not impossible to make.
Adding extra silicon silent around the switch or even welding it can solve this
issue.
Who has the problem: The problem is for all users with carpet or with
water damage. Currently, with Florence heading towards the Carolinas a dry/wet vacuum
is absolutely necessary for all individuals that suffered from water damage.
2.“FDA warning says some liquid nitrogen drinks and desserts can
kill you or damage organs” (https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/openurl?ctx_ver=z39.88-2004&rft_id=info%3Asid/infoweb.newsbank.com&svc_dat=WORLDNEWS&req_dat=0D0CB57BE7FF6D8A&rft_val_format=info%3Aofi/fmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&rft_dat=document_id%3Anews%252F16E5F9ED55A9D660)
Summary: Liquid nitrogen has an extremely low
boiling point (-320 F°), which means that it can only existed
in liquid form under very high pressure. Once release to atmospheric pressure
is beings to evaporate. With a growing fad of liquid nitrogen foods, the FDA now
is considering this a dangerous food that
can cause damage to skin or organs if used improperly.
Problem: Since liquid nitrogen boils at -320 F°
this means that if any liquid that has not evaporated is swallowed your organs
will be exposed to its same temperature. Thus, causing stage 4 frostbite, which means cell
death. So, if it is used improperly by untrained professionals, which is
usually the case at “kiosks, food courts and fair stands”, it can become a hazard.
Who has the problem: The problem is for any consumer that is
willing to expose themselves to any selection of food prepared with this ingredient.
3.“Florida man stole diesel fuel from Adam
Putnam's family, deputies say”(https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/openurl?ctx_ver=z39.88-2004&rft_id=info%3Asid/infoweb.newsbank.com&svc_dat=WORLDNEWS&req_dat=0D0CB57BE7FF6D8A&rft_val_format=info%3Aofi/fmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&rft_dat=document_id%3Anews%252F16E605B443B9F6D8)
Summary: A “Florida Man”, Donald Fowler, had stolen
60 gallons of diesel Fuel from a family owned Citric Grove. He was found hauling
a trailer without taillights or a license plate.
Problem: A petty thief was able to steal 60
gallons of diesel fuel with such easy. The only reason he was caught was
because the officer who made the arrest was at the right time and place.
Without any safety measures from the landowners what’s to say that this won’t
happen again.
Who has the problem: This is a problem for all agricultural
farmers that possess diesel storage takes on site.
4.“Who bludgeoned two high school students on
FIU's north campus? Police investigate.”(https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/openurl?ctx_ver=z39.88-2004&rft_id=info%3Asid/infoweb.newsbank.com&svc_dat=WORLDNEWS&req_dat=0D0CB57BE7FF6D8A&rft_val_format=info%3Aofi/fmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&rft_dat=document_id%3Anews%252F16E605B4695AA798)
Summary: Local high school students are
severally beaten while working on a school project. Bela Perdomo and James
Critz both were collecting water samples behind FIU’s north campus when an unidentified
male approached them with a what’s to be assumed as a tree branch and began
beating the two teens.
Problem: This could have been avoided if the
teens had any self defense training or had something to protect themselves
with, for example pepper spray. Sadly, in today’s world it has become clear
time and time again, that relying on others can sometimes be ineffective. Knowing
how to defend yourself and carrying something to defend yourself with can mean
the difference between life and death. Increasing security may stop events but
not the problem.
Who has the problem: The student body and individuals who
continue to rely on others for absolute protection.
5. “CHARGE:
TEACHER HID VIDEO CAMERA” (https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/openurl?ctx_ver=z39.88-2004&rft_id=info%3Asid/infoweb.newsbank.com&svc_dat=WORLDNEWS&req_dat=0D0CB57BE7FF6D8A&rft_val_format=info%3Aofi/fmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&rft_dat=document_id%3Anews%252F16E6A32E2995D020)
Summary: Mark William Ackett, a high school teacher
and coach had placed two camera phones in a changing room for the design class
he taught. A group of female students found the camera phone and went directly
to the administration, which called the police. This led to detectives
investigating and to Ackett’s testimony admitting to charges.
Problem: The problem here is that no one
addresses the areas that may present a danger to the students. The lack of awareness
that administration has for these kinds of issues can put students in danger.
Who has the problem: The student body has the
main issue as the are the victim of such crimes.
Hi Cesar, these are all very interesting articles. It is unbelievable to see how we can come up with opportunities when it comes to the different problems that organizations or individuals face. I was surprised by number 5. I agree with you with the problem that people tend to not focus on administrative positions since they are the ones who are supposed to provide the most professional ethic as well as to regulate the norms. In this case since the teacher has a higher authority, it is seen as a person who will not do such thing as hiding a camera. Very interesting articles!
